The Reading for Today: 1 Kings 9:1-9

Well, the Temple is all done and now Solomon finds himself with some quiet time with God alone. God appears to Solomon. Listen closely to what God says to him…and to you and me as well.

The whole future of God’s promises to Solomon and to his people are like a great door that will open and close if the hinges are oiled and the door is set perfectly into the hinges. Such a great door feels like it is floating on air when it is suchet this way and can be opened just by pushing against it with your finger. The two hinges for God’s message today are “if” and “then.” If Solomon acts with the same goodness of heart of his father, the great King David, and if he stays close to God, then the doorway to God’s future will open wide. But if the conditions are not met, the doorway to God will be closed tight.

What do you think and feel from this reading? God has some wonderful things in mind for you, just as God had for Solomon. Just dream about the years to come, and picture what you might be doing, and what you might be feeling.

  1. If…then…

My sister and I grew up with if…then…
The phrase was never one of bribery. We never heard “if you do this then I will buy you that.” No, it was a phrase of respect and direction. We were given the knowledge not only of what we should and should not do, but also the knowledge of what the consequence would be if we did otherwise. We were respected in our ability to make an intelligent, informed decision. That doesn’t mean we always made the right choices, but it sure made it easier to make them. The other thing we were given was the certainty that if… then… was true. Mom meant what she said and didn’t deviate. Her word was truth.

So here is Solomon in the same relationship with God. God loves, respects, and directs Solomon. His word is absolute truth. God has given Solomon wisdom and power. Now he gives him if… then… God gives Solomon the ability to make an informed decision, the ability to make the right decisions.

What about us? Are we left out here to stumble around on our own, making the right choices only by accident? No, God has given us if… then… to guide us in the scriptures, in the teachings of Jesus. There are too many! How are we supposed to remember them all? Don’t worry. You’re not expected to. Immerse yourself in the scripture and learn all you can. You will be strengthened and receive direction. The big if… then… you need to learn is…

“I assure you that whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and won’t come under judgment but has passed from death into life.” John 5:24

Alright, it is not written as if… then…, but listen…
Jesus says, if you hear me and believe in God then you will have eternal life.
