Many religious communities begin their day of prayer in the middle of the night with a gentle explosion of firelight as they begin to chant Psalm 95. So it has been for fifteen centuries, under the inspiration of Benedict, Father of Western Monasticism. It the first psalm of Advent this year.
Sense the joy of continuity as the fire of love within you blends with the fire of intercessors around the world, praying that the peoples of the earth be open to receive the Word of the Lord. Who knows what atrocities are averted because there are faithful brothers and sisters praying in this way! Instead of being prohibited from finally resting with the Lord, conversions take place and people hear at death “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34)
