Shaking Out the Soul

Nehemiah 5—7

Click or touch “Firestarter”
To listen to Nick read the one-minute introduction.

Nehemiah demonstrates the power of symbolic gesture in expressing outrage at the usury Jews exacted against one another. Sense the movement of the great qualities of this leader⎯humility, solidarity, and shrewdness in discerning plots of evil against him. At each moment of a crisis, Nehemiah turns to the Lord in prayer, shaking out his soul in the Lord’s presence, loosening any angers or fears, freeing the energies of devotion to the Lord in fulfilling the mission that “God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem” (2:12).

What are the emotions that lurk inside of you that tend to make you spiritually paralyzed? Shake out your soul before the Lord in prayer. Face opposition from within and without that would have you give up on the work that the Lord has put into your hands.

Orientation

Monday, April 29, 2012

Ezekiel 43—44

Click or touch “Firestarter”
To listen to Nick read the one-minute introduction.

The word "orientation"comes from the Latin root meaning to rise⎯the place of the rising sun. The east is a symbol of hope, of resurrection. Ancient Christian churches were oriented with the altar facing east.

In Ezekiel’s vision of the mystical temple, the doorway faces east, the glory of the Lord entering from the place of the new day. Feel the glory of the resurrection bathing you as you enter into the vision of the temple. Sense the presence of the altar in the depths of your soul as the very center of the temple-body of Jesus within whom you dwell.

All the details of these chapters have one purpose⎯immersion in the Holy. We become spiritually dis-oriented in life when we lose that deep, inner spiritual sense of God’s presence and holiness. The Lord offers it to you once again. Surrender to glory in these final weeks of the Easter Season.

As I Have Loved You

Sunday, April 28, 2012

John 13:31-35

Click or touch “Firestarter”
To listen to Nick read the one-minute introduction.

Love is freed from fickle ties to affection only. Now it is living out the ongoing presence of Jesus in the world through the way that he loved⎯unto death. The new commandment is not a stern, military-type order, but rather a charge, a mission, a commitment.

The setting for the reading is the Last Supper before Jesus’ death. It is also appropriate on this Sunday as we enter into the final three of the seven weeks in the Easter season. Jesus approaches his last suppers during the time of glory when he was with the disciples after the resurrection until Ascension Thursday, forty days after Easter.

Let there arise in the depths of your soul that sense of AS Jesus has loved you⎯to the death…the death of self. Let the Spirit give you the gift of giving your life for others.

The Community and Jesus Risen

Friday, April 26, 2013

John 20:24-31

Click or touch “Firestarter”
To listen to Nick read the one-minute introduction.

Thomas’ absence at the first appearance of Jesus becomes a handicap to knowing the presence of Jesus risen in the new community. For Thomas, an alive Jesus would be a revivified corpse. He had no idea that Jesus would live in him, rather than he in Jesus with his fingers in the open wounds.

The second encounter with Jesus eight days later begins as the first one in 20:19. There is, however, a small but very significant difference. In verse 19, the past tense is used: “Jesus came.” In verse 26, it is the present tense: “Jesus comes.” Even before the manifestation to Thomas, Jesus is already present in the community that loves in such a way, that his presence is manifest in them.

Are you part of a community that lives and loves in the Spirit? No personal preferences to see Jesus in any particular manner will substitute for this.

A Story Retold

Thursday, April 25, 2012

Acts 22

Click or touch “Firestarter”
To listen to Nick read the one-minute introduction.

We read the second of three accounts of the story of Paul’s conversion. Each telling is fresh, for there are a new opportunities for Paul to give praise to his Lord. Catch the joy in his spirit as Paul shares his deep conviction that no evil can ever come against him that will be able to withstand the power of his Jesus.

Cast your memory over your past life. Recall those times when God intervened in your life in clear and manifest ways. How did you respond? Spend time with the story of God’s shaping of your life to be in conformity with Jesus. There is energy in the retelling of the story as you move further into your life as it continues. Writing the story as Luke does, will deepen its impact upon you and upon others when you share it.

The Comforting Witness

Wednesday, April 24, 2012

Psalm 119:73-96

Click or touch “Firestarter”
To listen to Nick read the one-minute introduction.

Join the suffering of the psalmist with yours and others. Each verse with its rhythm and variation on the single theme of God’s self-communication brings comfort to the heart. God gently shares with us who God is in the gentle presence of the flow of the Word. The Holy Spirit is your beloved friend who strokes the forehead of your soul with these words. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter.

The fourth word for our Wednesday meditations is ‘edah, translated as “decrees” or “testimonies.” It is a legal term, also meaning “witness.” The root ‘uwd means, “to go around” or “repeat.” Consistent, repetitious true witness wins the case for the defendant.

Repeat the word ‘edah throughout the day as you receive the wonders of creation as witnesses of the beauty and love of the Creator.

Compassion in Action

Tuesday, April 23, 2012

Nehemiah 1—4

Click or touch “Firestarter”
To listen to Nick read the one-minute introduction.

Hear the prayer of this extraordinary leader who would mastermind and complete the rebuilding of the walls about Jerusalem. Compare Ezekiel and Nehemiah. Ezekiel’s vision of the Temple was not intended to be completed in an earthly manner: not so for Nehemiah. Vision, planning, energy, and sweat went into the completion of a 1.5 mile, 8 foot thick wall about the city. Workers had one hand on tools of reparation, the other on weapons of defense. Chapter 3 is as a great memorial plaque.

Rejoice to be within the walls of the new temple—the risen body of Jesus. Pray in compassion for the countless others outside the boundaries of this Body who live without the full protection of Jesus against the onslaughts of all the evils of our worldly society.
