Rags of poverty on Joshua become rich robes. This is not his doing, but the Lord’s. Contrast the robes and rags of Dives and Lazarus in yesterday’s reading. The rich man’s robes came from exploitation, manipulation, and the denial of the balance that comes when we share God’s good things.

The task before Joshua the priest and Zerubbabel the governor is to work together with the Spirit providing the energy for the completion of the Temple and the reviving of God’s people after the devastation of exile. The olive trees symbolize what we would come to know as “church and state.” These are set before Zechariah who prophesies under the power of the Spirit.

What are the divine tasks that the Lord puts before you? You will be given the courage to face them, for it is not you who will complete them, but the Holy Spirit.

“Rainbow” – an Alphabyte

Alphabytes are object meditations
that move through the alphabet two times
in the course of the fifty-two weeks in the year.
“Rainbow” introduces the fifth of thirteen weeks in Kingdomtide:
autumn in the north, spring in the south.
Alphabytes in Kingdomtide: “Nose” to “Zoom Lens”

Nick reads the Alphabyte.

Light and water meet, spreading the parents of all colors from earth’s end to end.
God posts the promise to Noah in the sky again.
However, rainbows are rare.
We need regular mindings of God’s delightful color presence.
Take the Bible and blend rainbow colors into it,
each day’s passage passing one color to the next.

Sunday: Gospel GOLD
Monday: Prophet PURPLE
Tuesday: DARK BLUE of Old Testament Days
Wednesday: Psalm’s GREEN Pastures
Thursday: New Testament ORANGE
Friday: The RED Blood of Christ’s Gospel
Saturday: Torah’s ROYAL BLUE

Color your days with the feel of God’s promise.

Rich and poor, good and evil, death and life, worship of self instead of God—there are stark contrasts in the readings for this week. The rainbow image from the Alphabyte suggests that we be alert to colors that would further the impact of all the readings upon your days. From the purple finery of Dives, to the garish colors of the dragon and the beasts of Revelation, your imaginations lead you through the inward senses of sight, sound and smell to the Lamb of God resting within.

Dives only saw the riches on his table. Blind to the beggar, he was blind to the Jesus present in the poor, recalling Matthew 25: “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty . . . ?” The rich man did not see Jesus on this side of the grave; neither will he see Jesus on the other side. Self-absorption and self-worship—he will only have himself for all eternity: how tormenting!

Michelangelo – “Creation of Adam” – The Cistine Chapel

We listen to the awesome words that recount the beginning of the universe. On fire with faith, our imaginations behold the work of God. God’s word is God’s work. This pattern recurs as a rhythm: “God said”…and then “God saw that it was good.”

The word “universe” literally means “The one thing that turns.” Make it personal— “The One who turns.” The description of creation takes place in thirty-four “turnings” we call “verses” in the Bible.

It took over three years for Michelangelo to recreate the creation of God onto the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As you come to the place of the beginning of the Jewish Torah cycle, may the Bible’s 30,442 verses, turn your whole being each day into a sacred chapel/temple that reflects the beauty and handiwork of God.

James Christensen “Widow’s Mite” https://www.artbrokerage.com

The cosmic image of the woman of yesterday is in marked contrast with the humble woman of today’s reading. We are in the Temple with Jesus and some disciples. Similar to the grand furnishings of the Temple described in Tuesday’s reading, proud Pharisees stand about in long robes. They form a border to the scene. An old woman enters, bent over, slowly making her way to the box that receives her offering of two small coins. Picture her, there in the center, in the spotlight of Jesus’ gaze; the Temple adornments and Pharisees are lost in the shadows.

Find comfort in the words about this remarkable, unnamed woman whom Jesus exalts. Quietly discover your brand of the two small coins and simply give them to the Lord. Empty yourself of everything, so that Jesus can fill you with everything.

Jacopo Tintoretto – “Battle of the Archangel Michael with Satan”
2nd half of 16th Century

The persecution of God’s people in the first century is described in bold images on a cosmic scale. The images stir within us a sobering awareness that the struggles of the first-century church are mirrored in our own day, with portents of what is to come. We will devote the last ten Thursdays of this year of grace to the second half of the Book of Revelation.

The woman clothed with the sun recalls the woman in Genesis 3, the twelve stars reminding us of God’s people in the twelve tribes. The ancient church also saw the woman as Mary, mother of Jesus. This image, as well as all the images of Revelation, evokes varying levels of meaning. The images are vehicles of God’s power at work in you bringing about victory against evil.

Evil Coming and Going

Psalm 141

Solomon learned how to pray from his father, David. The closeness of David to God peacefully reveals itself in this prayer of protection from the forces of evil that circle about him. He asks God to protect him from the seductive quality of evil as it threatens to enter him. He prays that God guard his mouth from evil; it is a prayer of protection against the comings and goings of wickedness.

Here in the center of the week, when the human family is beset with so many attacks from evil, let this gentle, confident prayer become yours. Pray not only for personal protection against evil, but allow this psalm to be a spark of fire the Spirit fans in you for intercessory prayer.
