Longing To Be Led

Tuesday of the First Week in Advent
Judges 1—2

Nick reads the one-minute introduction.

We begin to consider a period in Jewish history from 1380 to 1050 B.C. Joshua, the Lord’s special warrior, has entered into the Promised Land. Once there, possession of all the land begins to take place. Each person begins “to do their own thing.” Leadership is needed; the Lord gives gifts of direction to special persons to govern the people, make decisions, and win military victories over the enemies of God’s People. The Bible calls them “Judges.” Actually, they are a combination of what we would come to divide into three areas in our democratic nation—legislative, executive, and judicial. In addition, they combine military and civil, which we keep separate.

Advent is the time to ask: “Do I long to be led to inner freedom? Reach inward in faith to the Holy Spirit given to you as your personal lawyer and spiritual director.

Tuesdays are dedicated to Old Testament history and “The Writings.”
In the seasons of Advent to Epiphany this year we read the Book of Judges followed by a few chapters of Proverbs.
