Wait and Weight

Easter Wednesday

English is a language with many homonyms—words that sound the same, but have different meanings. We can play with words and not only create jokes with the meanings of these words, but sometimes these similar sounding words make new meanings about our life with God.

Today’s psalm begins with the words, “I’ll wait quietly before God.” Later it talks about the weight of any human person like a puff of air, compared with God’s “weight.”

Let’s play with the words “wait” and “weight.” Feel the weight of your body as you sink into the chair or floor as you begin to pray. Relax your muscles and drop into the physical space that God is offering to you right now. As you feel your body’s weight, picture yourself sitting on top of a rock, then inside a fortress as a place of refuge from anything or anyone who can hurt you. As you wait in prayer feeling your weight, open yourself to the one for whom you are waiting; God is already offering you the love and protection you need. As you wait, feel your weight. It is God within you who is waiting for you to sink into God’s protective arms.
