Those who wear glasses know how important they are to be able to find their way about in life. Today’s reading tells of the instructions God gave to the special priestly tribe of Levi and how they were to help people find God in their life. They were to teach the people about those activities in life that were sacred or holy, and those that were not―those activities that helped them to see and find God, and those that didn’t. These ways included how to worship and to sense a connection to God when offerings were made. These activities would be like a pair of spiritual glasses to help the people find God by the sacred links to God through spiritual habits of prayer and offerings.
Just as seeing clearly means not only wearing glasses but being sure that they are clean, so the Levites were in charge of being sure that laws of cleanliness were kept by the people.
When I was a child, we were taught a saying: “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” What will you do that will help you find God more clearly? What are the activities that can become sacred links to God?
