Echoes off the Walls of the Soul

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
James 2:5

I love to go into churches, and if nobody is around, to sing a verse of a hymn very loudly. I pause to listen to the echo that fills the space. Sometimes the voice hangs for a several seconds before disappearing into the silence. I imagine what it would be like when every pew is filled with worshippers singing in faith and joy!

Take the chapter in James today and listen to it against the walls of your soul. Empty rooms make for more echo. Well, the same is true with the spiritual side of our lives. If we are empty of all our “stuff”—selfishness, mean thoughts, jealousies, thinking about how to get back to those who hurt us—there’ll be so much clutter within, that when God speaks, the sound will be muffled. It would be like someone trying to listen to another who has a pillow over his or her head!

James has ten questions for us. How we respond to these questions will depend upon how our souls echo with their sound. If there is nothing in you to stop the answers that James is looking for, then you will respond to these questions as joyfully and as wholeheartedly as does James himself.
