The Amazing River

After many years not having fish as pets, we decided to buy a few goldfish―figuring that these were the easiest to take care of.   Wrong!  After a few weeks, two of them died.  What had happened?  It turned out that the water and the fish were not ready for each other.  So we had to empty out the tank and start all over and carefully prepare the water for the fish.  This time we did it right and the fish are fine.

Water is basic to life.  Though we are not fish, about half of our weight is water.  If you want to lose a lot of weight, just remove all the water…and the blood too, since most of it is water.  One problem—you’ll be dead!

God gave to Ezekiel an amazing image of a stream of water flowing from the center of the temple towards the east. Now that doesn’t sound very good.  I was pastor of a church when the heat pipes beneath the church broke and water started to seep up…Yuk!  But the temple that God showed Ezekiel was special.  Wonderful fresh water flowed from the temple.  The banks of the river were filled with life and lots of fish within.

Jesus used a similar example: living water would flow from him (John 4:10).  When the soldier opened Jesus’s side with a lance at the time of the crucifixion, blood and water flowed out.

Now here’s something very special.  Jesus said to us: “Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me…” Wow!  What a thought!  If you give yourself to Jesus, love and energy will flow out like fresh, clear water, giving life to all those in your path.
