A Betrayal

You can read this book in just a few minutes.  It’s the shortest book in the Bible!

To understand the vision of Obadiah, we recall the story of the meanness of Jacob and Esau which you can read in Genesis 27.  Even though these brothers made up with each other and returned to family love, the descendants of Esau, the Edomites, still resented God’s people and betrayed them.  They even became allies of the Babylonians who destroyed the sacred city of Jerusalem in the temple in 586 B.C. E. (Before the Common Era).

The book is divided into the evil deeds of the Edomites, and the description of the victory of the Lord.  Let your heart have a very “up” feeling in the words of promise of the last verse.  Here’s a verse from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, verse 5: “Love keeps no record of wrongs.”

Mondays are dedicated to the reading of the Hebrew Prophets.
