Here is a wonderful story about the wizard Balaam. It’s all about what God can do with good people who don’t yet know God.
If you want to read the whole story, start with chapter 22. It’s about wicked King Balak who wanted to harm God’s people. He was going to hire a wizard by the name of Balaam to have him curse God’s people. King Balak didn’t like the idea of having this huge number of God’s people coming so near his kingdom.
When Balaam thinks about cursing, God comes to him and shares the beauties of God’s people with him. Far from cursing God’s people, Balaam blesses them. This infuriates King Balak.
King Balak keeps trying to persuade Balaam to curse God’s people. Each time Balaam grows in love for God’s people and blesses them. In this chapter, we read the final prophecy of Balaam. He has a vision of a star coming as a descendent of Jacob. We see this as a prophecy about Jesus.
As you read this story, feel the good qualities of Balaam and how open he is to be taught by God and not by wicked people. He reminds us that everyone can listen to God way inside, if they are good and want to be open to God’s love and goodness. How much more do each of us have the grace of Jesus and the presence of the Holy Spirit inside us to tell us how to bless others by seeing how good they are!
