Time with Jesus

I’m sure you’ve been reminded at times by mom that she needs your help in the kitchen when you’re having guests. Let’s imagine that your parents have invited a beloved friend of the family for dinner.  You totally enjoy being with that person as you listen to stories and adventures.  Imagine your mom telling your beloved guest, “Doesn’t it bother you that I’m here in the kitchen all alone?  I need my child’s help!”

Something like this happened to two sisters, Martha and Mary, Jesus’ very close friends.  Jesus came by one night for dinner.  Each of the sisters were excited in their own way about Jesus’ visit and wanted him to be welcome in the house.  Martha was very busy in the kitchen preparing the best dinner possible.  She needed Mary’s help.  But Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet and so focused on him that nothing would distract her.  In her frustration, Martha scolds Jesus for not telling Mary to help Martha prepare the meal!  You’ll read Jesus’ response to her.

One thing is clear; we need time with Jesus before we get busy about many things.  Otherwise, we won’t feel Jesus’ presence during the activities of the day. Spending any time without Jesus’ presence is just not the way to live!
