The disciples were “out of it” for most of the night of the Last Supper. They just didn’t pick up on Jesus’s sadness and fear about what was going to happen. They got lost in their own pride, such as arguing about who would be the greatest in the new kingdom.
Jesus comes in and tries to turn their thinking around by saying that those who lead the most are called to serve the most. Then Peter’s gets very proud and says he’ll never deny Jesus! Yet he surely is going to deny him; we’ll read about that next week.
So watch what’s happening—especially in the agony in the garden. Don’t be like the other disciples who fall asleep when Jesus needs them the most. Stay awake awhile as you think about Jesus’s suffering. Be awake and aware that Jesus continues to suffer in the poor and innocent victims of others’s sins. Send love and prayer to them and God will see to it that waves of comfort will flow out from your heart to theirs.
Fridays are dedicated to the Gospels. This being Year C,
the third year in the cycle, we generally read from the Gospel of Luke.
