Praised Be Jesus Christ!

When I was seventeen, I entered what was called a “novitiate.”  These were the first two years I spent in a special religious community.”  The word “novice” means “new.”  We use this word at times for someone who is new in a profession-like a “novice” electrician or carpenter.

Every morning we spent an hour meditating upon a Bible passage.  We kept very strict silence before that, as we got up in the morning.  Yet the silence was broken as soon as we awakened with a person calling out in the dormitory in Latin: Laudetur, Jesus Christus! This means, Praised by Jesus Christ.  We would all answer, In saecula saeculorum! meaning,  Forever and ever.  To this day, I begin my day, saying this prayer with my wife as I get out of bed.

Morning prayer-time is very important to get you going on God’s path for the rest of the day.  This is what today’s Psalm is all about.  It looks as though each day for awhile was very challenging to the psalmist.  He needed to be very aware of God’s power and love as he faced a day full of people who were against him.

Happy New Year!
