Our Hebrew ancestors took forty years to make a trip that could have taken just a few weeks! They wandered about in the desert, so often doing what each one wanted, rather than what God wanted. God used this time to keep trying to teach them about how to live right and to follow God’s plans. But they were very stubborn—failing to trust the Lord in all the hardships of their journey.
The weeks of Lent begin with Jesus going into the desert like our ancestors. (Lent is the Old English word for springtime…because the days are “lengthening,”) This time, however, Jesus follows the plan of his Father. The devil tries to tempt him to be like our selfish ancestors, but Jesus refuses.
Listen carefully to the three temptations in the reading and see if you find anything about them that might be temptations for you and your family.
On Sundays we follow the Gospels from the Revised Common Lectionary.
