God’s Word as Seed

Part of the call of a prophet is not only to give voice to God’s words, but to express how God feels.  Jeremiah is very good at that.  God loves His people as a father and mother loves their own children.  Yet from the very start, God’s children have been defiant and disobedient to God.  Their hearts had become as hard as the frozen earth these days of winter.

But it’s Lent—the word for “spring.”  Soon the warmth of the sun will thaw out the ground and make it ready for the plows of the farmer.  Their first step will be to loosen the soil and make it ready to receive seeds for the fruits and flowers to come in a few months.

Each day when we read God’s Word, it falls into our hearts.  If your heart were like the ground, what would it be like?  Would it be cold or warm, hard of sifted? Are you ready to receive the life that is coming by the seed of God’s Word today?

 Jeremiah 4:1-4

Mondays are dedicated to the reading of the Hebrew Prophets.
This year in the season of Lent we read selections from Jeremiah 1—17.
