The Arms of the Good Shepherd

The first Christians of ancient Rome used to bury their dead and gather to worship in underground chambers called catacombs.  Here they would hide from the wicked Roman Emperors. The earliest images of art found on those dark walls were drawings of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.  The entrances to the catacombs were reminders that Jesus is the door to the Sheepfold.

This middle Sunday of the Easter Season has long been called “Good Shepherd Sunday.”  Sit in silence and welcome the arms of this gentle Shepherd who loves you and protects you, here at the center of the season that celebrates Christ’s risen life among us and in us.

 John 10:1-10

Sundays are dedicated to the Gospels from the Lectionary,
During most of Lent and Easter we read the Gospel of John.
