Check this out:Ezekiel uses the number “four”forty-seven times in his book, in fact, seven times in just six verses in chapter 10. There’s something special about the number four: think about the word “quarter,” the four directions, four walls in your room, the four seasons, and also, the number of the Evangelists. Slow down your reading so that the images in Ezekiel can come alive in you. Let Ezekiel take you where he wants to go.
The four faces have led to various later understandings of the faces of the Evangelists. St. Matthew is the winged man, St. Mark is the winged lion, St. Luke, the winged ox. St. John is the eagle as he soars very high and tells us wondrous things about Jesus.
