Even though the Moabites were wicked people, it is from them that one of the ancestors of Jesus would come. Ruth was from that land; she married a man named Boaz; they became the great grandparents of David; from David’s family, came Jesus.
God always draws the good from the bad, like gold that shines forth from the dark earth.
The People of Moab were idol worshipers with all the evils that come from those who give themselves to anyone or anything except God. God is filled with compassion for the innocent people of that country who were victims of the cruelty of others. Verse 2 is a powerful image: “The daughters of Moab at the fords of the Arnon are like orphaned birds pushed from the nest.”
