Waiting for God’s Hugs

Imagine that you are waiting at the airport for your Dad who is arriving from serving in the army overseas.  You’re with crowds of families straining their faces as they too wait for their loved ones to arrive. Finally the plane pulls up. . .Soldiers begin to walk toward the gate.  Everyone is so excited.  You see families hug with shouts of joy and tears flowing as their loved ones hug each other  However, your Dad hasn’t come of the plane just yet.  But then, “There he is!”  You run and leap into his arms.   

The writer of today’s psalm feels something like this.  God’s love and hugs are all that he longs for.  He needs God to come and to help him to overcome his enemies.  Like a series of hugs, each verse embraces the next one as the writer gets more and more in touch with God’s closeness to him.

The One that our souls most long for is the God who made us and who wants to share his life and love with us.
