The city of Jerusalem shakes in fear.  The Assyrians are coming led by the evil Sennacherib!  What are they going to do?  The city is on a hill, so it’s fairly easy to defend.  However, there was a big problem: how to get more water into the city when the siege came.  

King Hezekiah had a tunnel dug from the source of the Upper Gihon river directing water right into Jerusalem.  So intent where they on this plan, that Isaiah declared that they were doing this without any inspiration from God.  So confident were they that their plan would mean a protection from Sennacherib, that they sang and danced about saying, “Let’s eat and drink!  Tomorrow we may die” (verse 13).

The siege of Jerusalem began in 701 B.C. The actual destruction of the city came well over a hundred years later, in 589 B.C. The Book of Lamentations describes what happened when the suffering of God’s people was so great. 

I love this Proverb that sums up today’s story: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; don’t rely on your own intelligence.  Know him in all your paths, and he will keep your ways straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
