The aging Samuel has another vision in the night.  This one, however, does not have the joy and sweetness of the call from God he received when he was a little boy.  This time God visits Samuel with words of regret for having given God’s people a king.  

Samuel must have recalled what it was like to have been called as a boy when he recognizes the call of God upon the young shepherd boy, David.   Centuries later, the great apostle Paul would express God’s plan this way: “God chose what the world considers foolish to shame the wise. God chose what the world considers weak to shame the strong” (1 Cor. 1:27).  Jesus said: “I assure you that if you don’t turn your lives around and become like this little child, you will definitely not enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 18:3).
