Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life, death, things in the present, things in the future—everything belongs to you, 23 but you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
1 Corinthians 3:22-23
When we were kids walking on the boardwalk by the ocean, sometimes we’d get splinters in our feet. Mom would take a match and burn the tip of a needle and then slowly poke and pull at the splinter until it came out. Fire was needed to purify the needle so that nothing dirty or harmful would stay in our foot after the splinter came out. This was to stop what is called an infection.
The new community of love in ancient Corinth needed to be tested to see how faithful they would be to Christ’s love, or just go back and be infected by their old, wicked ways. If they “hung in there” and stayed loving, then they would be like a building of gold that stood the test of fire.
When something gets inside of you that hurts like a splinter, let the fire of God’s love burn it out so that you be left happy and peaceful once again.
