A Thirst for God

Just like a deer that craves streams of water,
my whole being craves you, God.
Psalm 42:1

Here’s a psalm that’s a favorite of so many.  How come?  It’s because of the very first verse. “Just like a deer that craves streams of water, so my soul craves for You.”  We catch the feeling right away.  In the land of our Jewish ancestors, water was often very hard to find.   A deer searches and searches until it finally finds a flowing stream with a swishing sound that’s like music to a deer’s ear.

Imagine you are that deer.  Be just like a deer longing for water. When you’re very thirsty, you just can’t wait to find water.  How you enjoy the first gulps!  Once there was a king that would hold on till he was very thirsty, just so he could enjoy quenching his thirst!

Way down inside, your soul, your very self, longs and craves for God.
