What God Is Like

The Lord is my solid rock, my fortress, my rescuer.
My God is my rock—I take refuge in him!—
he’s my shield and my salvation’s strength,
my place of safety and my shelter.
My savior! Save me from violence!
2 Samuel 22:2-3

King David is coming near the end of his life.  Like the chorus of a beautiful song, David collects together  all the blessings he has received from God.

Though we can’t fully understand God, we come close to understanding, by feeling what God is like.  Here, as in so many places in the Bible, this is what happens.  As you read David’s prayer, I suggest you have a pencil and paper ready so that you can make a list of all the things that David finds that remind him of what God is like.  What ones give you a special feeling of God?  For example, take the Bible Breath from verse 3: “You the rock where I am safe.”  Picture yourself on a high rock that no bully can climb to get at you.  Rest.  Feel safe.  That’s what God is to you and me— a rock that never moves.

2 Samuel 22:1-34
