Two Josephs

What an amazing turn of events!  Joseph sold into slavery, advancing in leadership in Egypt, now finds himself in front of his brothers seeking food in Egypt.  Here comes another experience for Joseph to know how God is not only taking care of him, but also of his family whom Joseph loves.  He doesn’t make it easy for his brothers to simply receive food and be reunited.  Think of what he might have said to them for having sold him into slavery.

Every year the Torah readings at this time are about Joseph.  It’s interesting that another Joseph comes forth as an important figure—the husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus.  In all the wonder of what happened to the world through Mary, she relied on the support of Joseph just as the Patriarch Joseph’s brothers relied on him.

Are there some further thoughts you have about these two Josephs?

The Saturday passages follow the reading list that Jewish people use in their synagogue worship throughout the world. They are taken from
“The Torah,” the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy that are read each year beginning with autumn.
