Gifts in the Night

Jacob receives a comforting, wonderful vision from God during the night.  This is the seventh time that God has spoken of the covenant–that very special relation that God offers us coming down from our  Hebrew ancestors. Two times the promise was given to Abraham, twice to Isaac, and this is now the third time to Jacob.  Jacob is reassured about the promises of the Lord;  he’s going to see his son Joseph before he dies Jacob dies!

Nighttime is special.  If you wake up during the night, think of God who wants to share quiet thoughts with you. Maybe a dream lingers in your memory that you can gently think about.  God might have something to say to you in the images of the dream.

All that God said to the patriarchs and prophets find their best and most perfect expression in Jesus.  His Spirit lives inside of you.  Listen to God telling you of God’s love and that God has special plans for you.  Maybe a few ideas about this might be given as gifts to you in the night.

The Saturday passages follow the reading list that Jewish people use in their synagogue worship throughout the world. They are taken from
“The Torah,” the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy that are read each year beginning with autumn.

These Firestarters are for families with children. For the Firestarters in the original edition, I recommend the ebook.  You will have the entire program of well over a thousand of these introductions with you on your phone or table! Check the menu options at the site for more information.
