Throughout the first letter of St. John which we’ve been reading on Thursdays, you’ll notice that he writes very simple, directs truths about God, our relation to God and to one another. This is especially so in today’s reading. Take verse 18 for example. “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love.” Now there’s a verse to ponder!
Here’s a Bible Breath on that verse: “Perfect love casting out fear.” As you breath in the first three syllables,”Perfect love, ” think about God’s love entering into you. When you breath out, “casting out fear,” let all fears be released from you.
God enables us to have compassion, even for those who dislike us and make us their enemies. When you find that you’re frightened by someone, turn to the Bible Breath above, open to God’s love for that other person. That one especially needs to feel loved.
