No Finger-Pointing

Jealous religious leaders try to trick Jesus.  They bring a woman to him who was caught giving a married kind of love to someone who was not her husband.  There was a law that such a woman must have stones thrown at her until she died.  Here’s the trap.  If Jesus agrees to having her stoned to death, all his teaching about compassion and forgiveness wouldn’t make much sense, since Jesus would be saying OK to such a horrible death.  On the other hand, if he said that she needed to be forgiven, Jesus would be found not to obey one of the ancient laws; that would get Jesus into trouble as well. Watch what Jesus does when you get to verse 7.  He didn’t get caught in the trap!

Stay quietly alongside Jesus and the woman after everyone else walks away.  Sense his love for her.  Jesus loves you very much, just like that woman.  He wants to protect you from others pointing their fingers at you.  Just as Jesus found a way to avoid being caught, when others try to trick you, he’ll show you a way out.

Fridays are dedicated to the Gospels. This year, we generally read from the Gospel of Mark,
except during most of Lent and Easter when we read from the Gospel of John.
