As delicious as a fresh apple is, a rotten one is not a pretty sight—and the last thing you ever want to do is to eat it! To show the difference between the spiritual fruit of those who were living godly lives and those who weren’t, in the time of Jeremiah, God told the prophet to put out two baskets—one with ripe figs, the other with rotten ones.
Jesus said: “A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a rotten tree can’t produce good fruit. . . You will know them by their fruit” (Matthew 7:18:20). The good that you and I do is precious, delicious fresh fruit for others. When we don’t share our goodness, the fruit in us becomes rotten.
In any age there are people and rulers like ripe or rotten figs. Yet the wonderful promise made by God to the people of Jeremiah’s day still holds true today. “I will give them a heart to know me, for I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.” (Jer 24:7). What a verse to memorize!
