It was a warm April afternoon in 1968. Martin Luther King had just been shot a few days previously. A great crowd marched through Newark, N.J., the city where I was born. At one point we were walking up a hill. When we reached the top and began to go down, the immense crowd was seen stretching far ahead. It took my breath away for a moment. There were people of all ages and races, babies in arms and little children holding hands with their mommies and daddies as we all quietly walked along. There was an immense feeling of peace.
Other great crowds walked along in peace, three times a year in the time of Jesus, making their way up the gentle hill to Jerusalem. They sang today’s psalm as they walked in joy.
Like the prayer of the sacred writer of this psalm, I pray that you may see your children, your grandchildren and even your great and great-great-grandchildren! May you have a long wonderful life filled with God’s love, living a life that shows God’s love within you.
