Little did the sacred writer of this psalm know that we would be reading this psalm just days before we remember Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Next week is Holy Week when day by day we recall the events in Jesus’s life that led up to his death on the cross.
Jesus was scourged with whips and was dragged to death on that cross. Hundreds of years before Jesus’ suffering, God put it into the mind and heart of the one who wrote this psalm to be telling about Jesus.
Like Jesus, the present-day city of Jerusalem suffers very much. Spend some time praying and loving Jerusalem as the writer of this prayer wants us to. Yet there is a spiritual Jerusalem: it is Christ’s holy Church, where we live with one another in the risen Lord Jesus.
