On TV and at the movies, there are previews of movies to come―“Previews of Coming Attractions.” These are meant to grab our interest so that we’ll want to see the movie.
Today’s story about bringing Lazarus back to life is like a preview to Jesus rising from the dead. For those Jewish leaders out after Jesus, this becomes the final event for the plot to kill him. For someone to raise another from the dead…why it would mean that Jesus’ popularity would become so great that people would no longer be interested in the religious leaders and they would lose control over the people.
Aren’t they a bit dumb, though? If Jesus can have power over someone else’s life and death, would he not also have power over his own death? Bringing Lazarus back to life is a “preview of coming attractions” of the death of Jesus and his resurrection.
Out of love for you, Jesus suffers the terrible death of being nailed to the cross. What a wonderful Easter you’ll celebrate if you’ve been close to Jesus all along the way of the cross!

Fridays are dedicated to the Gospels. This year, we generally read from the Gospel of Mark,
except during most of Lent and Easter when we read from the Gospel of John.
