The grace of God, so abundant and flowing in David and Solomon, ceases in the life of the next son and king, Rehoboam. Arrogance, a vice that gives a halt to grace and is a scandal to others, seethes in the heart of David’s grandson, rending asunder what God had put together—one sacred people. The evil of power and control turns the one sacred river of life, into two; Judah and Israel will separate.
The united cover of grace now lost, Judah becomes vulnerable to an attack from the age-old enemy of God’s designs, Egypt. The threat offers an opportunity for Rehoboam to become humble, opening himself once again to some measure of God’s saving help.
