Goodness and evil oscillate, along with celebration and disaster, as the final four of the twenty kings of Judah are accounted. The reign of the worst of these, Manasseh, is described in a few horrific verses; yet even he repents and is restored.

The pendulum swings to Josiah, great king of reform for God’s people. Feel the joy in the restoration of the Temple, the discovery of God’s Word and the especially memorable celebration of the Passover. Then disaster takes place again in the fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Temple, and the captivity in Babylon. However, good will triumph. God uses Cyrus, the pagan King of Persia, to be the means of restoring God’s people to their homeland.

Do not fail to see the many meanings contained in the final verse of this book of the Bible, as another year of grace begins to draw to a close.

At last, there is relief from chapters summarizing wicked deeds of kings! The good king Hezekiah sets out to restore true worship. The first step is to take out the rubbish that has accumulated in the sanctuary.

If you compare this account with the similar one in 2 Kings18—20, you will notice expansions on the theme of worship. The momentum of fervor in celebrating the Passover carries them into another seven days! Singing has great importance in the life of renewed worship.

Do you have any rubbish—or at least excess baggage—that is filling your inner sanctuary? Catch the fresh fervor of this reading. Together with the reading from Malachi yesterday, let the Spirit sweep your inner house clean as you pattern your life after the sacred words you are hearing these days.

Photos of the earth from a satellite reveal cities as tiny blotches of color flung across the globe. In one glance, the congestion, commotion, and conflict of whole cities are beheld in silence. In a similar way, the chronicler sweeps across the history of Judah in summaries of kings—some good, most evil.

Kings come and go. Whether good or bad, God continues to weave sacred history even with wicked thread. Life is short, especially when seen from above; remember Zaccaheus!

If you were to write a summary about your life, what would you want it to be? There is still time for you to update and upgrade your life according to the image that God had of you when you were first conceived. Keep the end and purpose of your existence in sight. The tiny details of today lived with love can make a magnificent mosaic tomorrow.

An Unholy Family

A most unholy family rules Judah—Jehoram, his son Ahaziah (also called Jehoahaz) and Jehoram’s wife, Athaliah. The utmost of brutal power and idolatry infect God’s people. The gushing forth of Jehoram’s intestines bears witness to the maxim: “As you live, so will you die.”

There are echoes in the protection of Moses and Jesus in their births as you read about the divine protection of Joash during the reign of the wicked Athaliah. He repairs the Temple and restores proper worship for God’s people. How sad to hear about how he ended his life, slipping into the apostasy that had driven its way into his life from previous generations!

Inspired by the verse for the day, pray that no similar intergenerational sin have any effect upon you.

The Weapon of Praise

Saint Paul would want you to remember his words: “What you sow you will reap,” as you read about the consequences of good and evil kings (Gal 6:7). The reference in Zechariah yesterday (10:2) about the sheep having no shepherd is present in today’s reading (18:16), an image that would become familiar in the Gospels.

Chapter 20 provides respite from the intrigues and infidelity of some of the leaders of God’s people. Give yourself special meditative time to pray through this chapter. Notice the power of praise as the weapon of victory over all enemies. Shift your focus away from what is coming against you in life, to praise for the One who is working out the victory for you at this very moment. The battle is not yours, but God’s!

King Abijah, Solomon’s grandson, reigns in Judah, the southern kingdom. In general, the south remains faithful to God at this time, the northern kingdom yielding to idolatry.

In the sixth century B.C., the captives return to find their lost history, aware that “for a long time Israel has been without the true God, without teaching priest and without law” (15:3). Though similar to 1 Kings 15, the chronicler places emphasis on the life of worship in tenth century B.C., as summarized in the verse for today.

The Firestarter in the morning and the daily reading—your morning “burnt offering.” In the evening, let there be an ember-like reflective glow over the day and its union with the day’s passage—your evening burnt sacrifice. Thus from morning till evening there will be sweet incense rising from your life bringing God’s presence and love to many others.

Humble Before Grace

The grace of God, so abundant and flowing in David and Solomon, ceases in the life of the next son and king, Rehoboam. Arrogance, a vice that gives a halt to grace and is a scandal to others, seethes in the heart of David’s grandson, rending asunder what God had put together—one sacred people. The evil of power and control turns the one sacred river of life, into two; Judah and Israel will separate.

The united cover of grace now lost, Judah becomes vulnerable to an attack from the age-old enemy of God’s designs, Egypt. The threat offers an opportunity for Rehoboam to become humble, opening himself once again to some measure of God’s saving help.

Anything fresh come to mind? Become humble before the saving hand of the Lord upon your life.
