Confrontation with compassion: these two words describe the tone of the final chapter of the Letter of James. God’s love flows forth from the way James simply tells the truth.

Throughout the letter there have been various exhortations from James; the final chapter completes the list. Verse 14 unfolds the sacramental power of prayer for the sick and anointing with oil. “Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.”

John Wesley and the first Methodists knew of the joy of confessing to one another. What would it take you to find this spiritual discipline an attractive addition to your life in community, instead of a threat?

Vulnerable Before Truth

Verse after verse stands on its own as precious truths and convictions. James uses a technique of balancing opposites in the opening verses. Just as dough is tossed back and forth from hand to hand, so do the parts of these verses move from side to side so that you, as dough, can be prepared for the oven of the Spirit.

James speaks plainly; that is one of the great benefits of his letter. Be vulnerable before truth, moving beyond guilt feelings that often come with awareness of sin, to the joy of being forgiven. A new life with the risen Lord comes in the Easter season.

A thought in keeping with verse 14… No one can assure you that today is not going to be the day that will appear on the memorial card for your funeral.

Amid the many verses that convict in this chapter, James poses ten questions to us with responses that need to echo forth from an emptied self. If the walls of your soul do not bounce with the sound of these truths, perhaps there may yet lurk hidden sinfulness that muffles their tones.

The letter challenges us with its call to integrity. The final verse overcomes the apparent opposition between Faith Alone of Paul and Faith and Works of James. “Just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.”

James is strong, but loving as well. So would any best friend of yours be, who saw you doing something to tarnish the goodness of God meant to shine from you. Take to heart. Repent. Be healed.
