God’s love, like circles and cycles, has no beginning or end. While we mark the conclusion of the three-year cycle of Bible readings and its beginning next week in Advent, the movement of God’s Word is all of one piece. These final chapters of the Old Testament are sutured to the New. The “coming messenger” is John the Baptist. There is unity of ends and beginnings, even as Advent begins the story of God’s grace, yet points to the end, in the Second Coming of Christ.

Verses 8-10 are among the principle texts in the Bible about tithing and giving the first fruits to the Lord. Make connections with economic systems of injustice that exploit the Third World. Linger on the blessed promises of the concluding verses of the Old Testament, and the curse upon those whose hearts are hardened.

Malachi decries corruption on the part of the priests and marital infidelity in God’s people. He rejects expression of emotion as a substitute for true offering in worship. In the midst of the very refuse of false worship and other abuses that Malachi would smear in the faces of the unfaithful, there are verses that warrant profound reflection. Take vv. 5-7, reading them not as applied only to the Levitic priesthood, but to yourself; you are called to be a priest in Christ Jesus. The qualities described in those verses are for you to live.

Do not pull apart from the yoke of the Lord, but tie these words to you, as a link between you and Jesus. Let the words be as a kind of spiritual lubricant for your way—peace, reverence, trust, justice, equity, knowledge.

Compassion and Worship

The final weeks of the cycle of prophets are dedicated to the last sacred writer of the Old Testament, Malachi. From him the torch would be passed to Matthew.

We are in the middle of the fifth century, B.C. The Temple has been rebuilt. Just as in the case of the original Temple of Solomon, when many lost interest in faithful worship and drifted to idolatry, so does Malachi call for authentic worship along with compassion. He teaches that the union of mercy and sacrifice is the kind of worship that God wants.

The slogan for Hallmark Cards has been applied to God the Father sending Jesus to us: “He cared enough to send the very best.” Will you return your very best to God in a fervent life on fire by personal and communal worship together with dedication to service?
