The final allotment of lands is decided with special provisions for the priestly house of Levi. Ponder the issue of the separate altar, which those tribes and half-tribes who settled on the eastern side of the Jordan had constructed. Find out why the rest of God’s people were so concerned about this and how the issue was resolved.

Once again, it is the dilemma of “The One and the Many.” The one sacrifice of Christ upon the cross irradiates across the globe, blending with the ongoing suffering of others.

Do you have a special place of prayer in your house that is a sanctuary for you? If not, create one. May it be for you what the eastern altar was—place of the rising sun. As each new day dawns, may God come more fully into your life.

God’s grace in the shining star penetrates the earth, revealing the fragile goodness and hardened arrogance that lurk there. Here in the middle of Epiphany Week, David’s bed of suffering evidences the struggle between good and evil. Verse after verse come as waves of feeling expressing the extent of David’s pain. However, the heart of this man extends even more, stretching his prayer to the utmost until he knows that God is answering him.

The coming of Christ brings turmoil to resistant ones. The more you turn your life over to God, the more persecution you will receive. Expect it! However, expect all the more that God will bring you beyond your pain to the triumphant experience by faith of God’s love and power in your life. Nothing nor anyone can take this away from you.

The fire of God’s Holy Spirit falls upon the quivering mouth of Isaiah, releasing the incense of prophesy. The first news is not good. The Lord reveals to Isaiah a people whose hearts have become as heavy and hardened as Herod’s.

Notice how quickly the move of the fire of God upon the prophet loosens him from the guilt and shame of his own sinfulness. Though made the more noticeable because of the contrast between human sinfulness and God’s immense holiness, Isaiah still allows God to do a new and wondrous work in him. He is ready to be sent. Shame is burned away; only the sweet smelling fragrance of being alive to God’s personal mission upon his life remains.

Pray until you are as ready as Isaiah to respond to the “whatever” of God’s will, with your very own “Here I am.”

Declaring the triumph of David over God’s enemies is the motive that the writer of 1 Chronicles finds to encourage God’s people having just returned from exile. Continuity with sacred history brings inner strength to the people. With God at the center of life, victory comes in great measure. “The Lord preserved David wherever he went” (18:6).

Military images might not appear fitting for successes that have come your way. Still, there is spiritual warfare taking place as evil giants seek to come against you. Do what David does and victory will be assured—prayer, recourse to God, confidence in the Lord, worship, and that joy that comes from knowing that you are very special to the Lord. Remember Paul’s words in Romans 8:31: If God is for us, who is against us?

The Ark that Carries God

David makes all decisions after prayer, consulting the Lord about the proper order (15:13). Spend time reflecting what this verse means in terms of your daily priorities.

Notice the frequent references to music as the Ark is returned to Jerusalem. Michal, Saul’s daughter, still carries old resentments and jealousies; she disdains David and his way of worshipping. Is there anything of Michal in you when you see the way others express their praise of God?

Enjoy the psalm that fills chapter 16. Verses in chapter 17 tilt to the coming of Jesus. Much more important than the house that David is going to build for God is the one that God is going to build for him. You and I are to be the ark that carries God!
