The opening verse of the passage, along with the living waters in 14:8, further the theme of the Well for this week. Apocalyptic images will have you feel the connection with the Book of Revelation as the energy of the year’s end mounts to conclusion. Also, see if you can find some verses that Matthew and Mark place on the lips of Jesus in the narrative of the Passion.

The nineteenth century German philosophy Nietzsche said: “That which doesn’t destroy me makes me stronger.” Zechariah expresses a similar conviction in using the image of the refiner’s fire as suffering comes upon the people. Who or what in your life are you resisting that, if embraced and accepted, would lift you to a higher place, as Zacchaeus, so that you can see Jesus?

Arrogant shepherds appear at the beginning of the reading, boasting as the Pharisee in yesterday’s parable. Hear the Lord’s outrage against such ones.

We are reminded of the suffering of Jesus, as we encounter verses from this prophet that Matthew and John have on their hearts in their passion narratives (Matt 27:3 ff; John 19:37).

Listen for the sounds of mourning that rise up from the people as they grieve—sounds in harmony with the expression of sorrow of the Publican of yesterday’s Gospel. Chapter 12, verse 10 reminds us that the Holy Spirit stirs such groans as birth pangs of the new creature you will become when you are dead to self.

Receive the absolute assurance of God’s promise of restoration for Israel and Judah as renewal and restoration for your own soul. As you read Zechariah’s list of the enemies of Israel that shall be overcome, become sensitive to your own list of all that would place itself as enemy in your life—sickness, family challenges, antagonists, etc.

In chapter 9, verse 9, there is joy in the description of the Messianic King that will bring about these victories. You are familiar with this verse, used by all four evangelists as they discover its fulfillment in the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

The Alphabyte “Usher” for this week offers a personal image, as you usher Jesus into the inner recesses of your own heart, there to take dominion of it, winning victory over all your enemies.

God’s call to obedience courses through these two chapters of sermons from Zechariah. Disobedience on the part of our ancestors made them vulnerable to foreign attacks and the destruction of Jerusalem and their sacred Temple.

Just as the salvation of the one leper who returned is better than all ten healed of leprosy, so fasting and worship may be external only, never going to the heart of total obedience—that surrender which has us walk in God’s ways with our hands in God’s.

Notice what happens. Just as the ten lepers of yesterday, ten persons from every foreign nation will let go of their unfaithful ways and cling to the sleeve of a believer. Your obedience and fidelity to the Lord can prompt others to let go of the “trapeze” of their vain works and cling to the Lord by grasping the sleeve of your faith.

The Four Horses of the Apocalypse – Painting by American artist Sharlene Lindskog-Osorio http://www.biblesearchers.com

Three more visions awaken the spirit of prophecy in Zechariah, making eight in all. An immense scroll, fifteen by thirty feet, wafts thieves and perjurers away in something like a magic carpet. Wickedness flies away in a basket. Connecting with yesterday’s Gospel, this is the removal of the scandals, the traps set for God’s people. The image of the four chariots sweeping from the four directions continues images of movement and completeness, as God’s power envelopes the entire earth. The divine gifts of kingship and priesthood are now united in one crown for Joshua, a messianic figure.

What do these images do for you? Is there anything yet coming between you and the Lord Christ who wants nothing less than your total freedom in the Spirit?

Rags of poverty on Joshua become rich robes. This is not his doing, but the Lord’s. Contrast the robes and rags of Dives and Lazarus in yesterday’s reading. The rich man’s robes came from exploitation, manipulation, and the denial of the balance that comes when we share God’s good things.

The task before Joshua the priest and Zerubbabel the governor is to work together with the Spirit providing the energy for the completion of the Temple and the reviving of God’s people after the devastation of exile. The olive trees symbolize what we would come to know as “church and state.” These are set before Zechariah who prophesies under the power of the Spirit.

What are the divine tasks that the Lord puts before you? You will be given the courage to face them, for it is not you who will complete them, but the Holy Spirit.

I will be a wall of fire around Jerusalem, says the Lord,
and I will be the glory within.

The lack of concern of yesterday’s unjust steward is set beside the call of God’s people in today’s reading to rebuild the Temple. Destruction of Solomon’s Temple and exile had plummeted God’s people into despair. While they have returned to their homeland, discouragement still hovers as a dark cloud over the people, de-energizing them from rebuilding the Temple. “How can we build a temple as magnificent as Solomon’s?”

Zechariah, whose name means “Yahweh Remembers,” receives eight visions of comfort and energy from God to empower the people to rebuild the Temple, sign of God’s life among them. Today’s reading has the first three of these visions. Read them as waves of comfort God is sending your way to enable to you to rebuild your own life according to the plans of the temple of Christ’s body in which you live, move, and have your being.
