The Still, Small Voice

Action ceases; the roller coaster stops. For Elijah, a time of quiet has come, setting for the strong experience of the presence of the Lord in the “still, small voice.” Sweetly and intimately, God communicates with the prophet. Then Elijah has a close companion who is anointed with prophecy as he—Elisha.

Action picks up again in the arrogance of a pagan king, Ben-Hadad, and the punishment of Ahab for letting Ben-Hadad get away. May you feel the disgust in your heart as you read about Ahab and Jezebel’s contempt for God’s ways. Let the Spirit stir you strongly to follow the Lord. Separate yourself from those people, places, and things that tempt you to put yourself in the center again.

A Prophet to Come Like Moses

Turn on your television, and you will likely find a commercial for a psychic hotline. It is stated that the calls are “For entertainment only,” disclaiming deception.

Chapter 18 from verse 9 explicitly prohibits these customs, calling them an “abomination to the Lord. The Lord does not speak to entertain you, but to give you life, with proper guidelines to be sure that you will grow.

In chapter 18 from 15–22, there is a remarkable prediction from Moses about a prophet like him that the Lord will raise up. Jesus fulfills this prophecy. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you God’s will for your life as you read in faith and trust.

The Saturday passages follow the reading list that Jewish people use in their synagogue worship
throughout the world. They are taken from
“The Torah,” the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy
that are read each year beginning with autumn.

Transfiguration and the Center

If you were to take the Gospel of Mark and fold it in half like a roof, this would be the top. The Transfiguration of the Lord is the centerpiece for this Gospel. The first part is going up to the top—miracles, teachings, the expansive movement of Jesus. The downside of the roof sees the prediction of the Passion and death of Jesus and the outcome of the opposition to Jesus in the Jewish authorities. This means a climb to another mountaintop. The Mount of the Transfiguration and Mount Calvary are both expressions of the glory of Jesus. Adore your Lord. God will be with you on the downside and then on the upside—the resurrection.
