The Power of Tenderness

Pouring out one’s deepest feelings to a loved one who will receive and accept them—truly this is one of life’s richest blessings. This happens in today’s reading. In the previous ten chapters of Hosea, you have heard the heart of God poured out in anguish at the infidelity of God’s spouse, the Chosen People. Now waves of tenderness well up from God’s heart. Be sure to enter the power of the tenderness of the example of a father teaching his son to walk.

Verse 7 deserves special attention—the difference between calling on the Lord and failing to exalt God in praise. Above all, receive the Lord in your heart through praise for who God is and not only for what God does.

Atheism: a False Religion

In Biblical times, atheism was never an option; this is a modern invention. Atheism, as we know it, is simply another false religion. The atheist is committed to something approaching an absolute—some “god” that he adheres to and “worships,” as did our wandering ancestors in the desert. Then there are “theists” for whom God is nothing more than a vague reality on the margin of life.

Is there any person, place, or thing elbowing a way into your life seeking to take the place that belongs to God alone?

The Saturday passages follow the reading list that Jewish people use in their synagogue worship
throughout the world. They are taken from
“The Torah,” the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy
that are read each year beginning with autumn.

Confessing Jesus, the Christ

Pray in total faith for your healing. If this does not happen according to your expectations, claim it still, accepting what is happening as a stage in the process. There is a powerful precedent for this in the healing of the blind man.

Peter receives the gift of extraordinary faith, and then soon lapses into his old self. He presumes to rebuke Jesus about the issue of his coming suffering. Jesus names the adversary, Satan—the one who comes to disrupt and block the powerful movement of God’s redemptive love in Christ.

Pray to keep the confession of Jesus as the Christ, fresh and free in your own heart. The Anointed One lives inside you and longs to share this anointing for ministry with you.
