The Gift of Discernment

You will be familiar with this ordinance of God from St. Luke’s account of the presentation of Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:22 ff). Jesus submits to the regulations of the Law in order to go beyond it. Jesus IS the Law and the Temple itself.

The priest is the one who diagnoses leprosy. This comes from the anointing for discernment outlined in the reading of last Saturday, Lev 10:9–11.

Pray to the Lord that you be given the gift of discernment. We are intended to tell the difference between what is clean and unclean in all aspects of life. We also need to discern the spiritual spaces of those with whom we associate, at the same time, never judging.

The Saturday passages follow the reading list that Jewish people use in their synagogue worship
throughout the world. They are taken from
“The Torah,” the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy
that are read each year beginning with autumn.

The Weight of Glory

Imagine a scale and the contents of your awareness—your world, with all its problems and challenges on one side, God and God’s power and glory on the other. Which side is heavier?

The verse for the day is the center verse in this passage. As you read, let each verse increase the weight of the Lord in your spirit, filling your mind and heart with a deepening consciousness of God’s presence to you.

The Hebrew concept of God’s glory, kabod means “weightiness.” Welcome the glory of God sinking into your soul as a weight that centers you. Feel the shift in the scale as your problems become lighter in the balance, the Lord filling you more and more with God’s glory.

Soaked with Spirit-Power

Again, God acts in the fullness of time. The waiting and expectancy are over; now God is moving in the final outpouring of divine life and love in the Holy Spirit.

There is a shift from the waiting for, to the outpouring of the Spirit in the words of Peter. The once impulsive, frightened, and reactive man now becomes a pure vessel for God’s strong, yet sweet activity through the Spirit.

The same changes can happen in you. Watch and wait with the disciples. The same Holy Spirit desires to infill you right now with power and love, transforming your unredeemed character into a personality totally soaked with Spirit-power and ready to move.
