God at Home in You

The Philistines have captured the Ark of the Covenant. It is as though they took God as a prisoner of war! Read what happens to their god, Dagon. Lesson: when we try to manipulate God into our own space, instead of surrendering into God’s space, false treasures and “idols” will fall.

In the center of the reading, there is a tender and charming shift in tone and feeling you will not want to miss.

Picture the cows drawing the wooden cart as they lead the Ark back to God’s people. There is no human driver. Listen in the silence to the hobbling of the wheels and the mooing of the cows as slowly the Ark makes its way back home again to God’s people.

What is God doing to bring the divine presence into your center? Are there any animals that come to mind that God is using for this?

1 Samuel 5—7

Hitting Bottom

The great stock market crash of 1929 provoked a variety of responses from people. Some jumped out of windows when financial disaster hit home; others found the Lord in a totally new way.

So it will be for Egypt. Isaiah foretells the total collapse of its economy. The Nile River will no longer bring life. There will literally be no more “stock” in its waters. Isaiah describes the devastation to come in detail. Suddenly in 19:18, there is a shift. Often when Isaiah uses the phrase “in that day,” he is prophesying Messianic times. Egyptians will begin to speak Hebrew, the sacred language of Canaan. They will come to know the Lord and God’s Word. Greater than the waters of the Nile will be the waters of the Torah that shall bring them life. Do you bounce when you “hit bottom”? Living waters are ready to bubble up within you from the Spirit.

Isaiah 19—20
