The Evening of Life

Autumn is the evening time of the year, as the earth “dies” in winter. The colder days and diminishing light continue to draw us into that inwardness which is the gift of autumn. Separate time this evening to review again the psalm-like prayer of King Hezekiah. It is the “evening” of his life, soon to end. His words flow with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit as a model for your prayer.

Hezekiah discovers images in the movement of his prayer. If you were to place yourself on your death-bed, what images of your own life would the Spirit give you? Even though you may only be imagining this hour as your last, are you sure of yet another whole hour when the clock chimes?

Isaiah 38

Mondays are dedicated to the reading of the Hebrew Prophets.
