We begin to consider a period in Jewish history from 1380 to 1050 B.C. Joshua, the Lord’s special warrior, has entered into the Promised Land. Once there, possession of all the land begins to take place. Each person begins “to do their own thing.” Leadership is needed; the Lord gives gifts of direction to special persons to govern the people, make decisions, and win military victories over the enemies of God’s People. The Bible calls them “Judges.” Actually, they are a combination of what we would come to divide into three areas in our democratic nation—legislative, executive, and judicial. In addition, they combine military and civil, which we keep separate.
Advent is the time to ask: “Do I long to be led to inner freedom? Reach inward in faith to the Holy Spirit given to you as your personal lawyer and spiritual director.
