Rivers from the Rock

In John’s Gospel, Jesus makes appearances at the three major Jewish feasts—Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles. For John, Jesus completes the deepest meaning of these feasts. In this chapter, Jesus secretly goes up for the Feast of Tabernacles, called Sukkot in Hebrew—the harvest festival, around mid-October, recalling the times when the people would set up tents in the fields as they gathered in the crops. It also brings to mind the temporary dwellings of God’s people as they journeyed through the wilderness.

The last day of Sukkot, is a feast called Simchat Torah, “The Joy of the Torah.” The Torah readings are completed and the cycle begins again. At this service, prayers for rain are said. In Jesus’s time, each day of The Feast of Tabernacles, water was brought, recalling the water from the rock in Exodus 17. “He who believes in me … out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” Come to your Rock and drink.

Fire from the Ashes – With Audio

As firelight from the darkness of ashes, comes today’s reading. Paul’s letter to the Colossians speaks about the exalted supremacy of Christ. Be lifted in faith to the heavenly places where you are to dwell in Christ. Each verse will do this for you, as so many wings that raise you up with resurrection power from “down” places in your life. Pray this passage, allowing the Holy Spirit to have full access to your heart.

Paul presents the theme of reconciling all things in Christ. As you begin to enter into these days of Lent, with whom do you find that you need reconciliation? Know that the Lord wants union for you with those God calls you to love. On your part, open your prayer to reconciliation. Especially pray that you and these persons together be totally reconciled to God. The Blood of Jesus has won this for you already. The red side of the spectrum fills you with joy—the blood of Jesus and the fire of the Spirit.

Colossians 1:1–18
