Burning Your Idols

God speaks to Moses and gives him the details of the enduring relation that God longs to have with us through the Covenant. However, the people below the mountain enter into full-blown idolatry. Just as a parent who is angry with a child and refers to him or her as the child of the other parent, God does the same when talking with Moses: “Your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.”

Just when God wants to do the most for the people, they turn away. Can you identify with this? When you get impatient, are there any idols that you construct to make up for the absence of feeling God’s presence? Walk by faith, not by feelings. Repent. Throw all the idols that you have into the fire.

Enemies Brought to a Halt

Rejoice in the wisdom of Jesus in his response to the tricks and dilemmas the scribes and Pharisees put before him. Today’s account of the woman caught in adultery has the famous response of Jesus: “Let those who have never sinned throw the first stones!” Jesus takes the very energy of the accusers and hurls it back upon them. He knows that their own sin will convict them.

Jesus’ intimate relation with the Father is revealed in the remainder of the reading. He experiences that union with the Father, which brings the power that comes against all his adversaries.

Remember that you have the Holy Spirit who helps you bring to a halt the attempts of your own enemies to harm you. In Christ, no one can really get at you. The same gift of intimacy that Jesus has with the Father is offered to you. That is all that really matters.
