Music in Your Being

Do you like to sing in the shower? The sound of the water and the privacy invites us to add singing, good or bad, to the setting, providing a safe place to express joy, even when fears challenge us.

David does something like this in today’s psalm. He sings about the wonders and the praises of God, though he is also aware of the presence of frightening enemies.

Decide to sing in your spirit to the Lord, even when you do not feel like it. A song will help to move your spirit into the presence of the Lord, showered by the waters of the Spirit. As metal to a magnet, your soul will cling more closely to the Lord as the Holy Spirit makes music in your being. Move beyond your comfort zone and sing aloud to the Lord!

We continue to read the Psalms in numerical order. We include Psalm 59 at the beginning of the season of Pentecost this year which take into account the two weeks at the end of Epiphany
which were skipped due to an early Easter.

Lust Losing Its Power

A special family clock rests on a table in my office. As I counsel people and see the movement of the hour, that familiar, lovely face from the past looks back at me, along with the face of the one with whom I am talking. I make sure that the clock is never near the edge; I like to see a border of table-top around it!

Is there a border, a boundary, a hedge about you and that special other person whom God may have given you to share life together? If not, then be open to the images of seduction in today’s passage. Be aware of the danger of even the slightest out-of-boundary flirtation.

There is one face you surely want to have before you at all times—the Lord’s face. The Holy Spirit will breathe honesty into your heart and wrench away the power of lust with the pure power of love.

Mountains and Valleys

Two mountains stand as great borders to the valley of the shadow of death and resurrection, which is the season of Lent and Easter. The first is Mount Tabor, where the Transfiguration of Jesus took place, celebrated at the end of the Epiphany Season. The other is the Mount of the Ascension, at the end of the season of Easter. Today’s reading bears both the heights of the glory of the good news, and the depths of the suffering of Jesus. The Lectionary reading for Good Friday sounds the somber yet poignantly beautiful images of the fourth and final Servant Song from 52:13.

Mountains and valleys: can there be one without the other? Though you are up in the heights one day, or down in the depths the next, Jesus is the one with the good news on the heights and with you as your Suffering Servant in the depths of your Good Fridays. Even if your life seems like one big roller coaster of ups and downs, remember that the Lord Jesus is always sitting next to you.

Mondays are dedicated to the reading of the Hebrew Prophets.
Since Easter was two weeks earlier than its mean week, the two weeks at the end of the Epiphany season are added to the beginning of the season of Pentecost.
