Tongues of Fire

The Gospel promises that with the coming of the Holy Spirit, the disciples will become strong, empowered by the very glory of Christ visited upon them in the Spirit. The tongues of fire upon their heads, become “tongues of fire” in their hearts and mouths. All fear is gone. Peter is bold, giving the first sermon that gathers so many into the Body of Christ that very first day. Babel is reversed. That cursed attempt to build a tower of gathered people that scatters them more than ever, now yields to a new communication that has each one understand in their own language (Genesis 11).

Get ready for the gift of Pentecost to flow into your soul. Claim it. The promises made by Jesus in the Gospel are for you. You have a permanent advocate, helper, comforter, and counselor in the Holy Spirit.

Everything Can Be Sacred

The celebrations in which Jewish people take part have their origins in the revelation of God to Moses. Here there is another listing of the feasts with details about how they are to be honored. These are the direct words of God to the people concerning how the seasons for farming and other events become sacred celebrations, ways to give God honor and glory.

I recall what Ignatius of Loyola wanted for the Jesuits: “Let them find God in all things.” How can you take the things you are called to do and have them become acts of worship and honor to the Lord?

This may help; the word “profane” in Latin means: “In front of the temple.” What is outside of the “temple” where the Lord dwells is profane. However, you are the temple of the Lord where the Blessed Trinity dwells. Actions that flow from this presence are sacred, those that do not are profane. May you grow in knowing Who lives within you.

Another Lord’s Prayer

The final passage from John this Easter Season is “The High Priestly Prayer, sometimes called another “Lord’s Prayer,” since we are taken right into the very heart of Jesus where he is one with the Father.

The prayer is in three parts: Glory for Jesus (vv. 1–5); that the apostles be sanctified (vv.6–19); that the Church be one (vv. 20–26).

It is the prayer of Jesus’s hour. John does not describe what the other three evangelists treat—the agony in the garden. The prayer of Jesus here takes place on the way, perhaps in a space just before he crosses the Brook Kidron and enters the garden. John’s entire Gospel is a Gospel of glory.

Pray this prayer slowly, letting the Spirit pray it within you, as you become one with the Lord.
