The early Church retraces the road to Calvary. The trial of Paul bears similarities to that of Jesus—hatred, false witness, and abuse. Paul confronts his accusers just as Jesus did when the Lord was struck in the face.

Enter the joy of Jesus as he appears to Paul, telling him that his present suffering is the prelude to Rome. God uses the rejection of Paul as the means to move him to the next place where God needs him—the center of the ancient world: Rome.

Felix and Pilate: do you see the similarities? Felix’s refusal to do justice has Paul further confined for two more years. The two-year wait becomes part of God’s timing. All plots to deny, delay, or delete God’s plan will fail. Are you becoming impatient with God’s plan upon your life?

Beneath the word for statutes (in Hebrew, choq), lies the root meaning, “to engrave.” It refers to written or engraved enactments, decrees, or prescriptions. It is also used for the written deed for lands, which defines official boundaries.

If it were not for the afflictions of the psalmist, he might not have learned God’s statutes more deeply. Put the written words of the Lord between you and your suffering. What are the official decrees that God has for you— the prescription that God wants you to take so that sickness and suffering retreat from the borders of your life? Since this refers to things written, let the Lord teach you in your journal the steps to take for your total healing and happiness.

Nehemiah demonstrates the power of symbolic gesture in expressing outrage at the usury Jews exacted against one another. Sense the movement of the great qualities of this leader—humility, solidarity, and shrewdness in discerning plots of evil against him. At each moment of a crisis, Nehemiah turns to the Lord in prayer, shaking out his soul in the Lord’s presence, loosening any angers or fears, freeing the energies of devotion to the Lord in fulfilling the mission that “God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem” (2:12).

What are the emotions that lurk inside of you that tend to make you spiritually paralyzed? Shake out your soul before the Lord in prayer. Face opposition from within and without that would have you give up on the work that the Lord has put into your hands.
